Yakamoz is the Turkish word for the moonlight’s reflection on water a quiet shimmer even in total darkness. That image spoke to us. Just as the moonlight reflects on the sea, we wanted this cafe to reflect our culture and heritage here in Cardiff.

Yakamoz proves that even in the darkest times, there is always light. For us, this cafe began as a distant dream. Now, it’s a real place where warmth, tradition, and community come together.

What Is Yakamoz?

Chef Erkan was born in Bolu Mengen, known as the heart of Turkish culinary tradition, where his journey began. He took his first steps in the profession grounded in authentic techniques and a deep respect for the craft. His path later led him to Cardiff, where he became the head chef at the city’s first Turkish restaurant, Bosphorus. He then played a key role in founding Saray Restaurant, where he served as head chef for nearly a decade.

His leadership helped shape the very reputation of Saray. What made the restaurant special wasn’t just the food, but the care and sincerity behind it. For Chef Erkan, the kitchen was never about numbers—it was about people. He has always believed in creating moments where guests don’t just get served, but feel genuinely welcomed and remembered
